Packard Plant redevelopment explored in latest video segment with Detroit Public Television

In our latest Daily Detroit collaboration with Detroit Public Television’s show “One Detroit,” Jer and I explore what’s happening at Detroit’s notorious Packard Plant.

As it turns out, not much — so far, anyway. Not after new owner and Peruvian developer Ferndando Palazuelo bought it out of tax foreclosure for $405,000 back in 2013, and held a groundbreaking in 2017, promising art galleries, apartments, shops, and a brewery.

We also reported earlier this year that the Packard is on Wayne County’s list of properties subject to foreclosure, mostly over unpaid stormwater drainage fees. The city has also demolished part of the sprawling, heavily blighted plant.

We cover all of that, some of the plant’s history, speak to a nearby business owner and speculate about it’s possible future in the segment, which you can watch above.
