While we were in Highland Park recording our Daily Detroit Happy Hour podcast episode with Mama Shu of Avalon Village, we ran into Alexis Ramsey, president of the Highland Park school board. Yes, the district is still a thing, though it has only about 335 students, all in one K-8 school.

But the district is newly freed of state-appointed emergency management and looking to once again grow. Ramsey talks about how board members want to create a new K-5 and 6-8 schools, part of new strategic plan for the district, plus plans for a new charter high school that would be fully owned by the district.

Currently, Highland Park students must choose to attend high school in another district.

“Our children don’t deserve to be bused out of here every day,” Ramsey said. “Our children deserve to have a high schol right in their backyard. We are 2.9 square miles. They should be able to have access to good education, strong education, sports, arts, good curriculum, right in their backyard.”
