Ferndale’s getting a new Peruvian restaurant called Culantro

A new Peruvian eatery called Culantro is getting set to open on Woodward Avenue in Ferndale. I spotted the bold, colorful new signage while passing by today and stopped by to have a look, though no one was around.

Culantro is actually the name of an herb with serrated leaves that is used in Latin American cooking. It’s not the same as cilantro (it’s reportedly more pungent and less delicate), though they’re in the same botanical family. It also has anti-inflammatory properties and is used for medicinal purposes.

Though it was dark inside, things look like they’re coming together quickly, with newly finished booths and tables, plus a foliage design painted in black and white along the wall. the restaurant is taking over the space that was formerly Southern Belle Bistro.

The Metro Times reports that the restaurant could open by early April. It’ll feature lots of traditional Peruvian fare, plus contemporary takes on traditional dishes. The owners, Equadoran and Peruvian immigrants, describe the cuisine as being similar to Cuban food, with lots of rice and meats, but with Peruvian ingredients like purple corn, plus Japanese-inspired seafood owing to the immigrant population in the South American country.

I’m looking forward to having a new kind of cuisine available and to trying Peruvian food.
