As we reported last week on the Daily Detroit News Byte podcast, Detroit’s MoGo bike share program plans to expand next spring to new Detroit neighborhoods and five inner-ring suburbs. And we can now confirm that the Detroit neighborhood is the Livernois “Avenue of Fashion” district between McNichols and Eight Mile, where it will join up with Ferndale, another participating community.
We had Lisa Nuszkowski, founder and executive director of MoGo, and Justin Lyons, the city of Ferndale’s planning manager, on the News Byte to talk in more detail about the plans to expand bike sharing to more communities.
Starting next spring, MoGo will add around 30 new stations and 150 of its orange bikes to the Avenue of Fashion and the suburbs Berkley, Ferndale, Huntington Woods, Oak Park and Royal Oak, thanks to a $495,380 Transportation Alternatives Program grant awarded by SEMCOG. MoGo has also received a $35,000 grant from the Better Bike Share Partnership to work with the various communities and the Live6 Alliance to help design the program.
In a separate followup, I asked Nuszkowski about sponsorship revenue to cover operational expenses for the expanded program. She said officials plan to meet with Henry Ford Health System and Health Alliance Plan, MoGo’s existing title sponsors, about the expansion and weren’t ready to announce a general solicitation for title sponsors.
I also asked Lyons about a $152,670 TAP grant to make bike-friendly improvements to Woodward Heights in Ferndale.
