The date sneaked up on me this year, but I am once again helping to plan activities around Bike to Work Day in Detroit, which is next Friday, May 19.
We’ll follow pretty much the same script from last year, with three pit stops — New Center Park, Old Main at Wayne State University, and downtown at Coleman A. Young Municipal Center (a.k.a. City Hall). There will be food and coffee and giveaways, hopefully a MoGo bike share setup, and maybe even a guest speaker.
Wheelhouse Detroit has once again offered secure, guarded bike parking at City Hall throughout the day, and Fitness Works has agreed to open its doors to bicyclists who need a shower before work.
The map remains the same as well, though it remains to be seen as of this writing whether we’ll get participants on routes such as Gratiot or Grand River. The Hamtramck route may also change to take advantage of the Dequindre Cut.
We’re asking people to register over at Detroit Greenways Coalition, one of the primary organizers and sponsors, to help us with planning. If you do it soon enough, you’ll get a free T-shirt.
This is always a fun event and a great opportunity for seasoned bike commuters and newbs alike. Come join us!
