Last night I had the pleasure of interviewing Drew Philp for the Daily Detroit Happy Hour Podcast. He’s the author of a lengthy Buzzfeed essay from 2014 that went viral about his experiences buying an abandoned home in Detroit’s urban prairie and slowly making it habitable.
Now, he’s got a brand new book, “A $500 House in Detroit: Rebuilding an Abandoned Home and an American City.” Philp is a hell of a writer and a down to earth guy. We talk about the home project, what it’s like living in a neighborhood long ago left for dead, and how places like it in Detroit might just show the nation a different way forward.
