Music Corner: Preview the new album from trippy San Francisco songwriter Meg Baird

Live_at_WFMU_on_Shrunken_Planets_July_7th_2012-12137The last decade or so has seen a renaissance of left-field psychedelic folk-rock, led by bands like Grizzly Bear, Akron/Family, Midlake and Black Mountain. I’ve always had a thing for trippy, druggy and drone-y music, so I was instantly smitten with the wistful acoustic underpinnings and delicate vocals of Meg Baird’s forthcoming new album, “Don’t Weigh Down the Light.”

You can learn more about Baird and preview her yet-to-be-released album on NPR’s First Listen. Her music is loaded with plenty of 60s folk touchpoints; NPR compares her with the likes of Fairport Convention. First Listen describes it as Sunday morning music for when you want to slow down and actually listen. It reminds me of sitting by an open window during a gentle spring rain.

The new album comes out June 23, so if you’re reading this after then, check out an older track from her below and get lost in a YouTube rabbit hole. Or download her 2012 in-studio performance at WFMU-FM.
